Indonesia expands defence, trade, renewable, halal ties
Entities: Fastpol pyrolysis technology · Petasol fuel · Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN) · Heru Susanto
Overview
From May through early July 2026 Jakarta pursued a broad‑based outreach, pairing defence cooperation with economic and clean‑energy initiatives. Partnerships with Japan, the United States, Europe and regional neighbours yielded joint naval exercises, tactical‑vehicle co‑production, aerospace projects, sustainable‑aviation‑fuel research and a renewable‑energy workforce programme with Pertamina and the Ministry of Higher Education. Diplomatic pushes added tourism promotion, counter‑terrorism dialogue, port‑development plans and QR‑code payment integration, while education links saw conferences with SAP and student exchanges in Bangladesh. Trade expansion was cemented by the Indonesia‑Peru Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
In mid‑July the focus turned to domestic innovation. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) signed a non‑disclosure agreement with state shipbuilder PT PAL to develop hydrodynamics and underwater technology and promoted plastic‑to‑fuel pyrolysis, converting hard‑to‑recycle waste into the renewable diesel Petasol, now deployed at more than 60 sites.
Late July, Indonesia’s halal assurance agency highlighted the sector as a strategic growth driver. Together with Malaysia and Thailand, the countries used the Indonesia‑Malaysia‑Thailand Growth Triangle to harmonise certification, expand processing infrastructure and attract investment, with Sarawak’s ports, airports and industrial zones positioned to serve regional demand.
BRIN also launched a fast‑pyrolysis process, Fastpol, in a pilot at Bantul, Yogyakarta, producing diesel‑like fuel from low‑value plastic waste and underscoring economic incentives for recycling.
At the same time, Indonesia deepened strategic partnerships with South Korea and Norway. Talks in Manila accelerated a comprehensive partnership with South Korea, focusing on defence, energy and Korean shipyard investment in Indonesia, while cooperation with Norway centred on the energy transition, sustainable marine aquaculture, forest monitoring and broader climate‑action commitments.
