China's 2026 Summer Grain Harvest Surpasses 150 Million Tonnes

In 2026 China reported a record summer grain harvest of 150.75 million tonnes (301.49 billion jin), the first time the output exceeded 150 million tonnes. The harvest was up 0.7% from the previous year, with the cultivated area remaining essentially stable at 26.53 million hectares and average yields rising 0.8% to 5,681.6 kg per hectare.

The record was achieved despite earlier delays in winter wheat planting caused by heavy rains. The government supported farmers with emergency resources, subsidies, minimum‑price policies, insurance schemes and technical assistance, which helped maintain stable planting areas and boost productivity.

Separately, autumn wheat production also reached a new high of 138.95 million tonnes, a 0.6% increase year‑on‑year, even though flooding reduced the wheat‑sown area by 0.3% to 23.01 million hectares. The combined growth in both summer and autumn grain outputs underlines China's strengthening food‑security position and its influence on global grain markets.
