China car imports drop 11% in H1 2026
China imported 200,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026, an 11% year‑on‑year decline. June 2026 imports fell to 38,000 units, also down 11% from a year earlier. The slowdown was cushioned by a low import base in late 2025 and was exacerbated by shipping disruptions caused by the US‑Iran war in March and April.
Retail sales of imported cars fell 29% to 190,000 units in the first half, with June retail sales plunging to 30,000 units, a 39% drop. Imports are reverting to a traditional gasoline mix; battery‑electric vehicle imports fell 36% and plug‑in hybrids 58%, leaving new‑energy vehicles at just 2% of imports. Japan remained the top source with 103,493 units (up 20,095), followed by Germany with 44,311 units, the United States with 17,732 units, Slovakia and the United Kingdom among the other suppliers.
