China's biopharma rise reshapes global innovation and dealmaking

China is rapidly emerging as a dominant force in the global biopharma ecosystem, reshaping how international pharmaceutical companies approach innovation and dealmaking. According to GlobalData Healthcare, China has solidified its position as the world’s second-largest developer of innovative drugs, characterized by faster and more cost-effective clinical trials.

The scale of Chinese biopharma influence is reflected in significant financial shifts. In 2025, the value of China’s out-licensing deals reached $115 billion, with nearly half of all US in-licensing now originating from China. Major transactions, such as AstraZeneca’s historic $18.5 billion deal with CSPC, demonstrate a move toward acquiring full development platforms rather than just single assets.

In the United States, the rise of Chinese biotech has sparked debate regarding national security and research funding. At a recent forum in Boston, industry leaders and the American Biosecurity Initiative discussed the implications of Chinese innovation on the American biotech landscape. Experts noted that China’s dominance in the ecosystem makes it an unavoidable factor for global industry players, even as geopolitical complexities increase the risks for Western companies engaging with the region.
