China experimental maglev hits 800 km/h in 5.3 seconds
An experimental maglev vehicle in China has set a new world record for short-distance acceleration, reaching speeds of 800 km/h (approximately 497 mph) in just 5.3 seconds. The test was conducted at the Donghu Laboratory in Hubei province on a one-kilometer-long specialized track.
This achievement marks the third record broken by the same research team within a six-month period. Previous tests in 2025 saw the 1.1-tonne vehicle reach speeds of 650 km/h, 700 km/h, and 798 km/h. The system utilizes magnetic levitation to eliminate friction and electromagnetic propulsion to drive the vehicle forward.
Researchers emphasized that this technology is not currently intended for commercial passenger transport. Instead, the experiments focus on testing the limits of high-power energy delivery, levitation control, and emergency braking. The data gathered may have future applications in advanced rocketry, drones, and military capabilities.
