China is conducting experimental high-speed transport tests involving advanced propulsion and acceleration technologies. Initial reports highlighted a 1-ton vehicle from the National University of Defense Technology that accelerated from 0 to 700 km/h in two seconds through optimized propulsion and control protocols.
Subsequent testing at the Donghu Laboratory in Hubei province saw an experimental maglev train set a new record by reaching approximately 800 km/h (497 mph) in 5.3 seconds on a 1 km track. This marks the third record-breaking acceleration test in six months. The 1,100-kilogram vehicle uses magnetic coils for levitation and propulsion to eliminate rail friction.
Developed by the China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC), this unmanned vehicle reached a specific speed of approximately 799.84 km/h. During these latest trials, researchers successfully demonstrated controlled braking, bringing the vehicle to a stop within approximately 200 meters. However, the forces involved are extreme; while acceleration reaches roughly 4.3 Gs, braking forces can exceed 12.5 Gs.
Because these forces would be fatal or cause severe injury to humans, the project is not intended for immediate passenger use. Instead, the research focuses on advancing electromagnetic propulsion, high-power energy delivery, levitation control, and positioning. Scientists suggest these technological breakthroughs, specifically the electromagnetic catapult technology, could eventually be applied to advanced rocketry, drones, and aircraft launch systems on carriers.
