China's Gansu province issues red flood alert as heavy rains threaten
Authorities in China’s northwest provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu issued emergency alerts on July 30 as heavy rain raised the risk of floods and landslides. Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi, upgraded its rainstorm warning to the highest red level and closed all valleys along the Qin Mountains and several forest parks. Gansu’s meteorological bureau raised its emergency response for heavy rain to Level III from Level IV and issued a red alert for geological disasters in Longnan, temporarily shutting 61 tourist attractions.
Earlier in July, a flash‑flood in the Shuangshimen gorge of Weiyuan County, Gansu, killed 10 people, injured 23 and left one resident missing. Rescuers saved 174 people. The gorge’s flash‑flood warning was issued at 9 a.m., four hours before the water surged, while a separate rainstorm alert at 10:30 a.m. did not cover the site. A landslide in early July in Gansu had previously killed 21 people.
