China's J-20 Stealth Fighter Fleet Approaches 200, Outpacing US F-22s

China’s fifth‑generation stealth fighter, the J‑20, has entered serial production and is rapidly expanding its numbers. Western analysts estimated at least 150 operational aircraft in early 2023; satellite analysis in mid‑2024 shows the fleet has risen to roughly 195‑200 machines, distributed across 12 air‑regiments, including a two‑seat variant.

The growth is driven by China’s indigenous WS‑15 engine, now in serial production, replacing earlier Russian‑sourced powerplants and giving the PLAAF greater operational autonomy. By contrast, the United States fields about 185 F‑22 Raptors, of which only 143 are combat‑ready, while India remains far behind in jet‑engine development, still relying on foreign engines for its fighters.

The accelerating J‑20 production demonstrates China’s advancing industrial capacity for high‑technology weapon systems and is viewed as a potential shift in the regional air‑power balance.
