India defence manufacturing and fighter build‑up
Entities: GE Aerospace · Indian Air Force · F404-IN20 engine · Hindustan Aeronautics Limited · Tejas Mk-1A fighter
Overview
April‑June 2026 saw rapid expansion of India’s defence co‑production, formalising the AMCA stealth‑fighter complex, accelerating Rafale procurement with domestic production, and progressing engine development and Netra AEW&C certification. In July HAL received its seventh GE F404‑IN20 engine, easing the bottleneck that had delayed Tejas Mk‑1A assembly and allowing the first batch of the 83‑ordered aircraft—later slated for 180—to be delivered by late‑2026. The prolonged engine shortage underscored reliance on U.S. propulsion and prompted talks on a possible Russian partnership to co‑develop and locally build a twin‑seat Su‑57E‑5, integrating Indian radar, avionics and weapons as an interim fifth‑generation capability.
Open‑source analysis now estimates China’s J‑20 fleet at roughly 200 aircraft, with serial production of the WS‑15 engine boosting output and widening the capability gap that India, still dependent on foreign powerplants, must close.
Four Indian Rafale fighters, two C‑17 transports and more than 120 airmen arrived in Darwin on 17 July 2026 for the multinational Pitch Black exercise, which runs from 20 July to 7 August with roughly 100 aircraft and 2,500 personnel from over 20 nations. The IAF contingent now also includes IL‑78 aerial‑refuelers, reinforcing interoperability and Indo‑Pacific security ties.
HAL has subsequently taken delivery of several additional GE F404‑IN20 engines, restoring the supply chain for the Tejas Mk‑1A programme. With 20 Mk‑1A airframes built and awaiting engine fit‑checks, HAL expects to hand over the first full squadron by March 2027. Integration of the Israeli EL/M‑2052 AES A‑radar and its EW suite remains pending after the indigenous Uttam radar was abandoned. Production capacity has been expanded to 24‑30 aircraft per year across three Bangalore‑Nashik assembly lines, and HAL is preparing to start limited Su‑30MKI production for 2028‑29.
The disparity with China’s expanding fleet intensifies pressure on India to speed up Rafale deliveries, indigenous fighter development and engine self‑reliance.
