China's NEV Sales Lead Auto Market as Overall Vehicle Sales Fall

In June 2026, electric vehicles dominated China's car market. Tesla Model Y topped the list with 38,654 units sold, followed by Geely's Xingyuan (EX2) and Leapmotor A10. The five best‑selling models were all EVs, and Chinese manufacturers occupied 21 of the top‑30 positions, signalling a shift toward electric mobility.

During the first 26 days of July 2026, retail sales of new‑energy vehicles (NEVs) slipped 2% year‑on‑year to 738,000 units, a 10% decline from the previous month, yet NEVs captured 65.7% of passenger‑car retail penetration and 70% of wholesale volume. Overall passenger‑vehicle retail sales fell 18% year‑on‑year to 1.123 million units, highlighting that NEVs outperformed a weakening broader market.
