China's YY-20 tanker refuels Egyptian Rafale for first time

During the Eagles of Civilization 2026 joint military exercises, a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force YY-20 tanker successfully performed aerial refueling of an Egyptian Air Force Dassault Rafale. This marks the first documented instance of a Chinese tanker transferring fuel to a Western-built fighter jet.

The Chinese contingent, which traveled over 6,000 kilometers to reach Egypt, included J-16 fighters, YY-20A tankers, Y-20 transport aircraft, and KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft. The exercises involve air combat tactics, air superiority operations, and combat search and rescue drills.

While social media reports and Chinese military blogs have circulated unverified claims of a 7-1 victory for Chinese J-16 fighters over Egyptian Rafales in simulated engagements, no official data or telemetry from Cairo or Beijing has confirmed these results. Defense analysts suggest these unverified scorelines may be part of information campaigns to promote Chinese aircraft in export markets.
