Chinese automakers BYD and GAC boost Brazilian production and localization

Chinese carmaker GAC announced plans to expand its presence in Brazil by building a new factory in Catalão, Goiás, scheduled to start operations in 2027. The company aims to diversify its product range beyond electric vehicles, offering a mix of electric, hybrid and extended‑range models tailored to local consumer preferences. GAC also intends to work with partners to expand Brazil’s fast‑charging network and adapt its vehicles to the country’s energy mix.

Separately, BYD is investing about R$5.5 billion in its industrial complex in Camaçari, Bahia, with the goal of nationalizing 50 % of vehicle content by early 2027. While battery cells will still be imported, the automaker plans to assemble batteries and increase local production of components such as stamping, welding and painting. BYD targets becoming the best‑selling automobile brand in Brazil by 2030.
