EV charging & manufacturing tie-up Brazil-Iberia

Overview

In July 2026, the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry, Trade and Services approved GAC’s US$1.3 bn investment to build a vehicle-manufacturing plant in Catalão, Goiás, with a 50,000-unit annual capacity and a research centre focused on flex-fuel and REEV technologies. The project is part of the MOVER (Mobilidade Verde e Inovação) programme, which also grants GAC financial credits.

Alongside the plant, GAC, GreenV and the mobility platform 99 reaffirmed their agreement to install 242 rapid-charging points by 2030 at GAC dealerships and dedicated hubs in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasília, under the Aliança pela Mobilidade Sustentável.

Later in July, GAC said the new factory will produce not only electric models but also hybrid and extended-range vehicles tailored to Brazil’s energy mix, and it will continue expanding the fast-charging network in partnership with local operators.

At the same time, Chinese automaker BYD disclosed a R$5.5 bn investment in a Camaçari, Bahia complex aimed at nationalising 50% of vehicle content by early 2027, including local battery-cell assembly and component production, with a goal of becoming Brazil’s top-selling brand by 2030.

These Brazilian developments build on earlier Iberian actions—Vigo’s new EV chargers, Galp’s north-south ultra-fast corridor, and Goldenergy’s subsidised home-charging programme—highlighting a widening trans-Atlantic collaboration that links Iberian expertise with Brazil’s rapidly expanding EV market.
