Chinese automakers unveil over 650 new models in first half of 2026

Between 1 January and 30 June 2026 Chinese vehicle manufacturers introduced or refreshed roughly 650 models – more than four new or updated cars each day, according to Bloomberg and data from the China Automotive Technology Research Center (CATARC). BYD executive He Zhiqi called the figure “crazy”, and BYD’s leadership described the market as “fierce and even ruthless”. The rapid pace is driven by shortened development cycles, AI‑accelerated design and a competitive pricing war, with manufacturers pushing advanced driver‑assist systems, higher‑density batteries and fast‑charging technology.

For comparison, the United States recorded only 29 new or upgraded models in 2024 and is projected to reach about 159 new introductions through 2030. Chinese brands are also gaining ground in Europe: their share of the mid‑size and large SUV segment rose from about 12 % a few years ago to 25.1 %, overtaking several Japanese and American rivals. BYD leads with the plug‑in‑hybrid Seal U and electric Sealion 7, while Xpeng’s G6 and Chery’s Tiggo models also rank highly. Competitive pricing – for example, the MG S9 plug‑in‑hybrid listed at €44,990 in Germany – helps Chinese SUVs capture price‑sensitive buyers as registrations in Europe grew 27 % in the first five months of the year.
