Central Europe EV shift, Chinese market share climbs

Overview

Since July 2026, Chinese EV makers have continued to expand their presence across Central and Western Europe while overall electric adoption accelerates. Chinese brands reached a record 10.9% share of overall new-car registrations in Europe, with plug-in hybrids accounting for roughly one-third of all such sales in the EU. Between January and July 2026, Chinese manufacturers sold 813,096 vehicles, a 102% increase compared to the same period the previous year. BYD demonstrated significant momentum with a 146% increase in sales, while SAIC led in total volume for the first seven months.

By late August 2026, the competitive landscape shifted as manufacturers like XPeng began challenging established German brands. XPeng unveiled the L03, a compact SUV Coupé featuring a Range Extender Electric Vehicle (REEV) configuration. In early September 2026, XPeng announced the L03 would debut in Poland in October, with sales starting in December. The Polish lineup will include four fully electric versions and one PowerX EREV variant, with prices ranging from 154,900 PLN to 206,900 PLN.

However, rapid expansion has created operational friction. In September 2026, German automotive dealers for BYD and XPeng reported significant payment delays regarding contractually agreed bonuses and subsidies. Some dealers described XPeng’s payment practices as “elendig” (miserable), noting outstanding claims reaching hundreds of thousands of euros.
