Chinese automotive exports surge amid global market reconfiguration

The global automotive industry is undergoing a structural reconfiguration driven by the rapid rise of Chinese exports. Industry estimates suggest Chinese vehicle exports could reach 12 million units this year, a significant increase from 3 million in 2022.

At the Automotive News Congress 2026, Ford Motor Co. CEO Jim Farley warned that it is “too late” for European nations to address the competitive pressure from Chinese manufacturers. While the United States utilizes tariffs exceeding 100% and software bans to protect its market, Farley emphasized a dual strategy for Ford: competing directly with Chinese firms while simultaneously pursuing strategic partnerships to optimize capital and expertise. This includes collaborations with CATL for battery production in Michigan and working with Geely on electric vehicles for the European market.

Concurrently, at the China–ASEAN Expo in Nanning, Chinese manufacturers are showcasing expanded technological capabilities. Wuling, a key participant, launched its “Global 5” strategy, aiming to transition from an exporter to a global player through local production, technology transfers, and international partnerships. Wuling reports having sold over 32 million vehicles to date, including more than 4 million electrified models.
