Chinese banks lead global asset rankings for 2026

Based on 2025 year-end financial statements and S&P Global Market Intelligence data, Chinese financial institutions maintain global leadership in total assets. The four largest banks in China collectively hold over $26 trillion in assets, nearly double the combined total of the five largest United States banks.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) ranks first globally with $7.65 trillion in assets, approximately 73% more than the second-ranked JPMorgan Chase at $4.42 trillion. China Construction Bank (CCB) holds the third position globally with assets totaling 42.6 trillion yuan (approximately $6.52 trillion).

While Chinese banks dominate in asset scale, institutions from the United States and Europe are noted for their operational scale and profitability. The top ten global rankings include major players such as Agricultural Bank of China, Bank of America, BNP Paribas, HSBC, and Crédit Agricole.
