Global banking asset rankings dominance
Overview
Data from 2025 year-end financial statements indicates that Chinese financial institutions maintain a dominant position in global banking rankings by total assets. The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) remains the world’s largest bank, holding approximately USD 7.65 trillion in assets.
China holds the top four positions globally, with the Agricultural Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Bank of China following ICBC. Collectively, these four institutions hold more than USD 26 trillion in assets, a figure nearly double the combined total of the five largest United States banks.
While Chinese banks lead in asset scale, other major institutions maintain significant global presence. JPMorgan Chase & Co. ranks as the largest bank outside of China and the most valuable in terms of market capitalization. In Europe, France’s BNP Paribas has emerged as the continent’s largest bank, overtaking the United Kingdom’s HSBC.
