Chinese battery makers partner with Brazilian firms for energy storage
Chinese energy storage companies are forming strategic partnerships with Brazilian firms to localize production ahead of upcoming energy auctions. Jinko ESS has signed a memorandum of understanding with UCB Power to develop nationalized energy storage systems. This move aims to meet local content requirements for the December 2 auction, which could also facilitate access to BNDES financing.
Similarly, CATL has entered a partnership with Moura to combine its storage solutions with local expertise. Meanwhile, BYD has announced an investment of up to R$ 500 million in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Brazil, introducing large-scale solutions like the Haohan XN, which features a 14,568 kWh capacity.
The push for localization comes as Brazil prepares for two major auctions in December: one on the 2nd focused on national content and another on the 4th open to all participants. The first auction has seen record interest, with over 296 GW of projects registered, as the country seeks to stabilize its grid amid growing renewable energy integration.
