Chinese brands and electric vehicles expand in Argentina
The Argentine automotive market is experiencing a significant shift driven by the expansion of Chinese brands and the rising popularity of electrified vehicles. In August, brands linked to Chinese groups accounted for 4,513 units, representing 10.8% of operations. When including vehicles manufactured in China, such as certain Ford and Chevrolet models, the total reaches 15.6% of registrations.
Price competitiveness is a primary driver for this growth. Several Chinese models are positioned in the mid-range segment under US$35,000. The JMEV Easy 3 is currently the most affordable vehicle in the market at US$18,900, followed by models from JAC, Kaiyi, Forthing, Chery, BYD, MG, and BAIC.
Data from Car One indicates a massive surge in electrified vehicle operations, which grew approximately 2,000% compared to the previous twelve-month period. While electrified models still represent a minority of the total business—accounting for 4.3% of total operations and 7.4% of new vehicle sales—the trend is altering consumer habits and challenging traditional brand loyalty in favor of lower fuel and tax costs.
