Chinese cheap clothing found with hazardous chemicals in European market

Laboratory tests of low‑price garments sold by Chinese online retailers have revealed that the majority of sampled items contain hazardous substances. Close to 70% of the clothing examined failed to meet European safety standards, with heavy metals and formaldehyde detected in concentrations above the permitted limits.

Health experts warn that repeated exposure to these chemicals can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and other health problems, especially for children and people with sensitive skin. Consumers are advised to check product information, verify compliance with EU regulations and wash new garments before first use. The findings have prompted calls for stricter quality controls of imported apparel sold through platforms such as Shein and Temu.
