Chinese automakers expand presence at Paris Motor Show
The 2026 Paris Motor Show has highlighted a significant shift in the European automotive landscape, characterized by the aggressive expansion of Chinese manufacturers. The number of Chinese brands at the event has doubled to twenty over the last two years, with companies such as BYD, Xpeng, Chery, and Aito showcasing advanced electric and hybrid technologies. Analysts note that Chinese brands are capturing a substantial portion of market growth; one report indicates that 84% of the 500,000 additional vehicle sales in Europe between January and August were attributed to Chinese groups.
To mitigate trade restrictions, several Chinese firms are pursuing localized production strategies. Changan aims to produce up to 350,000 vehicles locally in Europe by 2030, while Xpeng is targeting annual European sales of 500,000 vehicles by the same year. Other brands, such as Leapmotor, are already collaborating with European partners like Stellantis to establish manufacturing footprints.
In response, European manufacturers are emphasizing design, heritage, and retro-inspired concepts to maintain competitiveness. Stellantis has presented numerous concept vehicles, including a new Citroën 2CV, to signal future design directions. Meanwhile, Stellantis has also announced a ₹4,000 crore investment in India to expand its Jeep and Citroën portfolios by 2030.
