Chinese electric‑vehicle gigafactories are built around tightly integrated vertical value chains that combine battery chemistry, power‑train electronics and final vehicle assembly under a single management structure. This integration cuts interfaces, shortens lead times and lowers production costs.
Automation is applied selectively: robots handle hazardous, repetitive or quality‑critical tasks such as electrolyte dosing, cell winding, welding and end‑of‑line testing, while human operators focus on low‑volume, high‑variability work. Decisions on automation are guided by overall equipment effectiveness (OEE); if a technology does not improve availability, performance or quality beyond its total cost of ownership, a hybrid human‑machine approach is retained.
Statistical process control, continuous PFMEA updates and real‑time metrology feed predictive models that adjust set‑points on the fly, delivering “quality by design” and reducing rework. The combined effect is a steep learning curve, lower scrap rates and more flexible, faster scaling of new EV models.
