Xiaomi and BYD accelerate expansion into European EV markets
Chinese automotive manufacturers are significantly expanding their presence in the European market. Xiaomi has announced its intention to begin selling electric vehicles in Germany and other European countries starting in 2027. To facilitate this, the company has signed memorandums of understanding with eight major German dealership groups, including Emil Frey and LUEG, to establish a sales and after-sales network. Xiaomi is also promoting new SUV models, such as the Skynomad N70 and N90, as part of this push.
Simultaneously, BYD is in the final stages of deciding on its second European production facility. The company is considering acquiring an existing automotive plant, with Spain and France emerging as primary candidates for investment. This move aims to accelerate the production of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles within the region to meet ‘Made in Europe’ regulatory trends.
In Albania, the shift toward electric mobility is also evident. Imports from China are increasing, with Chinese vehicles accounting for 16.9% of new registrations in the first half of 2026, while traditional markets like Germany and Italy have seen a decline in their market share.
