Chinese EV and truck expansion across Europe
Overview
Geely’s European rollout continued in August with the formal launch of its compact E2 hatchback. Reservations opened in Belgium at a discounted €19,490, while Germany began accepting orders with a base price of €19,990 and a free-charging credit. Hungary, Spain, and Turkey also received pricing and trim details, with deliveries slated for late 2026. In Spain, Geely Auto implemented price reductions to increase competitiveness, lowering the entry-level price for the Geely E5 and the Starray EM-i hybrid by €2,000 each. The expansion of Chinese-led electric mobility extends to heavy-duty transport via SuperPanther’s eTopas 600 electric truck, which has entered series production in Austria. These 42-tonne trucks are being delivered to logistics operators like DHL Freight across several European countries. In the German passenger market, electrification is accelerating. August 2026 data from the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) shows electric vehicle registrations surged by approximately 75 percent, reaching a record market share of 32.4 percent, while gasoline and diesel registrations fell significantly. This shift contributed to an 18 percent reduction in average CO2 emissions for new vehicles, which fell to 86 grams per kilometer. In the UK, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached a 30 percent market share in August. Across Europe, BEVs reached a 22.2 percent market share in the first half of 2026, surpassing gasoline vehicles for the first time. Chinese manufacturers are capitalizing on this shift; BYD reported a 371.8 percent registration increase in August. BYD’s international revenue now accounts for 53 percent of its total revenue, exceeding its domestic Chinese revenue. BYD is currently considering Spain and France as potential locations for its second European production facility, which would involve acquiring an existing automotive plant. Xiaomi Auto has announced plans to enter the German and broader European markets in 2027.
