XPeng launches automated production line for IRON humanoid robot
XPeng has activated a new production line in Guangzhou for its IRON humanoid robot, marking a transition from research and development to industrial manufacturing. The facility is reportedly the world’s first automated production line for advanced humanoid robots, with over 80% of core processes automated. During the launch, the IRON robot successfully walked autonomously off the assembly line.
The IRON robot features 76 degrees of freedom and is powered by three proprietary Turing AI chips, providing up to 2,250 TOPS of computing power. This hardware allows the robot to run physical AI models locally without the need for constant remote human operation. XPeng aims to begin mass production by the end of 2026, with commercial deliveries in China and international markets planned for 2027.
This move is part of a broader strategic shift among Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Nio, BYD, and Geely, to enter the robotics market. Facing slowing EV sales and shrinking profit margins, these companies are leveraging their existing expertise in motors, chips, and smart-driving software—roughly 85% of which can be reused—to create a new growth curve in the technology sector.
