Expansion of Chinese humanoid robot manufacturing and R&D
Overview
The Chinese humanoid robotics sector is rapidly advancing through massive infrastructure investments and a strategic shift toward industrial manufacturing. To address the critical need for training datasets, the Shijingshan Humanoid Robot Data Training Center has opened in Beijing. This 700 million yuan facility utilizes 100 robots to generate roughly 29,000 hours of data annually to develop an ‘embodied brain’ for robots.
Manufacturing capabilities are scaling up significantly. XPeng has activated a new production line in Guangzhou for its ‘IRON’ humanoid robot, marking a transition from R&D to industrial manufacturing. The facility is reportedly the world’s first automated production line for such robots, with over 80% of core processes automated. The IRON robot, which stands 173 cm tall and weighs 65 kg, features 76 degrees of freedom and three proprietary Turing AI chips providing 2,250 TOPS of computing power. This hardware allows the robot to run ‘Physical AI’ models locally without constant remote operation.
To support these efforts, XPeng secured over $900 million in a funding round led by IDG Capital, with participation from Tencent and Alibaba, bringing its post-money valuation to over $6.3 billion. The funds are earmarked for hardware and software development, Physical AI model training, and the establishment of mass production facilities. XPeng aims for mass production by late 2026, with commercial deliveries planned for 2027. Initial deployments are expected within XPeng’s own manufacturing and service sectors.
Parallel to commercial growth, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is intensifying research into military integration. Building on the fact that Chinese manufacturers provided approximately 95% of the world’s humanoid robots in 2025, the PLA is exploring the use of bipedal and quadrupedal robot teams for high-risk urban combat. Additionally, humanoid technology is seeing trial deployments in Shenzhen for police patrol and surveillance, alongside advancements in AI-driven robotic surgical systems.
