Chinese FM Wang Yi Calls for Enhanced BRICS Security Dialogue at New Delhi Meeting

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the 16th BRICS National Security Advisors and High Representatives on National Security meeting in New Delhi on June 22‑23. He met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other delegations, stressing that intertwined conventional and non‑conventional security threats make it “the right time” for deeper BRICS cooperation. Wang highlighted lessons from the recent US‑Israel‑Iran conflict, urging the bloc to safeguard international rules, respect sovereignty, adopt a new security vision and strengthen multilateralism.

India, chairing the meeting, focused the agenda on non‑traditional security challenges such as terrorism enabled by emerging technologies, cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, weaponisation of supply chains, food, fertilizer and energy insecurity, and climate‑induced instability. No joint statement was issued, reflecting divergent views among members. The dialogue set the stage for the BRICS summit slated for September in India and for China’s upcoming tenure as rotating BRICS chair.
