Chinese GWM Tank 300 Launch Highlights Rise of Light Hybrids in Brazil

Great Wall Motors (GWM) introduced the Tank 300, a plug‑in hybrid 4×4 SUV, in Brazil. The vehicle combines a 2.0‑litre turbo gasoline engine with an electric motor for a total output of 394 hp and a torque of 76.5 kNm. It features a 9‑speed automatic transmission, a 37.1 kWh battery that provides up to 75 km of electric‑only range, and a full‑time four‑wheel‑drive system with multiple off‑road modes. The Tank 300’s design echoes the Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes‑B Class G, but its hybrid powertrain shows how Chinese manufacturers are advancing in automotive technology.

At the same time, light‑hybrid (MHEV) models are gaining traction across Brazil’s car market. Because they retain a conventional combustion engine while adding a modest electric assist, they offer better fuel economy and lower emissions without the higher purchase price or charging infrastructure required for full‑electric vehicles. Major brands—including Fiat, Jeep, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Renault, GWM, CAOA Chery and BYD—are expanding their MHEV line‑ups to meet consumer demand for affordable, practical electrification.
