Chinese humanoid robot scores goals against human goalkeepers

A Chinese research team from Tsinghua Hephaestus has developed a humanoid robot capable of scoring goals against a human goalkeeper. According to a study published in Science Robotics, the robot utilizes a new AI-driven control system that integrates perception and motion control, allowing it to track a moving ball via camera and adjust its steps in real-time.

The technology was tested on the T1 humanoid robot, manufactured by Booster Robotics, which stands 1.20 meters tall and weighs 30 kilograms. In controlled tests involving 140 attempts from various positions, the robot achieved a success rate of 80 to 90 percent in the front field and 60 to 70 percent in the rear field.

Technical improvements noted in the study include a 46 percent reduction in ball position estimation error and a 64 percent reduction in the time required to shoot compared to traditional rule-based control systems. The researchers used football as a complex testing environment to refine the robot's ability to maintain balance and adapt to dynamic movements.
