Massachusetts resident Yupeng Sun charged with 2024 voter fraud

Yupeng Sun, a 33-year-old Chinese national residing in Massachusetts, has been arrested and charged with fraudulent voter registration and fraudulent voting related to the 2024 presidential election. Federal prosecutors allege that Sun impersonated a legal permanent resident to register to vote online in October 2024 and subsequently cast an early ballot in that individual's name at Malden City Hall.

The case involves allegations of a complex scheme intended to harm a former landlord with whom Sun had a history of disputes. Beyond the election fraud, Sun is accused of filing fraudulent immigration forms to falsely claim the landlord and his wife were abandoning their legal permanent resident status. This resulted in the couple having their green cards seized upon returning from an international trip in June 2024.

In a notable twist, Sun allegedly submitted anonymous tips to Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in early 2026, reporting the very individual he had impersonated for illegal voting. An immigration judge eventually restored the victims' permanent resident status after forensic evidence showed the abandonment forms were not signed by them. Sun faces up to five years in prison for each charge.
