Massachusetts voter impersonation and fraud case

Yupeng Sun, a Chinese national residing in Massachusetts, has been charged by federal prosecutors for voter impersonation and fraud related to the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Prosecutors allege that in October 2024, Sun used the name, date of birth, and driver’s license number of a lawful permanent resident to register to vote online and subsequently cast an early ballot in Malden.

The investigation revealed that the alleged election fraud was part of a broader scheme to target a former landlord with whom Sun had disputes. Sun is accused of filing fraudulent immigration forms to falsely claim the landlord and his wife were abandoning their legal permanent resident status, which led to the couple being placed into removal proceedings and having their green cards seized.

In early 2026, Sun reportedly submitted anonymous tips to Homeland Security Investigations regarding the very individual he had impersonated. While an immigration judge eventually restored the victims' permanent resident status after forensic evidence refuted the abandonment claims, Sun now faces federal charges that could result in up to five years in prison for each count. The incident has prompted legal experts to question how the impersonation bypassed Massachusetts’ online voter registration safeguards.
