Chinese naval hospital ship arrives in Ghana for medical mission

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship AUSPICIOUS ARK (Hull 868) has arrived at Tema Port, Ghana, to begin a seven-day humanitarian medical mission under Mission Harmony 2026. This marks the first reported visit to Ghana by a Chinese naval hospital ship.

During the mission, the vessel will provide medical services to the public, utilizing onboard facilities such as dental clinics, gynaecology, ophthalmology, surgical theatres, and inpatient wards. The mission also aims to facilitate professional exchanges between Ghanaian and Chinese military medical personnel, focusing on naval medicine, specialized healthcare delivery, and emergency medical response.

In response to the arrival, health policy analyst Dr. Kwame Asante has urged the Ghanaian government to maintain strict oversight. He cautioned that the administration must protect national health data and ensure that medical officers from the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) monitor all activities and medications aboard the ship to safeguard national security and public health.
