Chinese smartphone brands lead in fast-charging technology

Chinese smartphone manufacturers, such as Oppo and Xiaomi, are outpacing Western competitors like Apple, Samsung, and Google in fast-charging technology. While Western models often utilize lower charging specifications, Chinese brands have long offered systems exceeding 100W, capable of charging a battery from 0 to 50% in under ten minutes.

This technological lead is attributed to over a decade of investment in proprietary standards, specialized battery designs, and advanced thermal management. For instance, Oppo has developed custom adapters to reduce long-term heat load, while Xiaomi employs a dual-cell battery approach to manage voltage and current more efficiently. These innovations have become integrated into local manufacturing supply chains, making them more cost-effective to implement.

In contrast, Western development has largely relied on standards like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge. Although the Quick Charge 5+ standard introduced in 2025 can support up to 140W and is compatible with USB Power Delivery, its widespread implementation remains limited compared to the high-wattage solutions already prevalent in the Chinese market.
