Smartphone fast-charging technology standards

The smartphone industry utilizes various fast-charging technologies, with the industry largely centered around the USB Power Delivery (USB PD) standard. Recent iterations like USB PD 3.1 have increased power ceilings to 240W, while the Programmable Power Supply (PPS) feature allows devices to request precise voltage and current variations to optimize efficiency. Major Western manufacturers, including Apple, Samsung, and Google, utilize these standards.

However, Chinese manufacturers such as Oppo and Xiaomi are outpacing Western competitors in charging speed. These brands often offer systems exceeding 100W, capable of charging a battery from 0 to 50% in under ten minutes. This lead is attributed to long-term investment in proprietary standards, specialized battery designs, and advanced thermal management, such as Oppo’s custom adapters and Xiaomi’s dual-cell battery approach.

While Western development has relied on standards like Qualcomm’s Quick Charge, the widespread implementation of high-wattage solutions like Quick Charge 5+ remains limited compared to the prevalence of high-speed charging in the Chinese market.
