Chocolate health myths examined for International Chocolate Day

In observance of International Chocolate Day on September 13, several common claims regarding chocolate consumption are being examined.

Regarding the health benefits of dark chocolate, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) notes that dark chocolate typically contains higher levels of cocoa flavanols than milk chocolate. These plant compounds may support blood vessel function by aiding dilation. However, the EFSA clarifies that this does not mean dark chocolate is a universally healthy food or a guaranteed protection against cardiovascular disease. The 200 milligrams of flavanols cited by the EFSA is a specific amount used in studies rather than a general dietary recommendation.

Additionally, the link between chocolate consumption and acne remains inconclusive. While research has not definitively established a direct causal relationship, some systematic reviews suggest a connection between acne and diets with a high glycemic index, noting that milk chocolate is often high in both sugar and carbohydrates.
