Chocolate prices in Japan nearly double due to cacao shortages
Chocolate prices in Japan have risen significantly, nearly doubling in cost over the past decade. According to data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the retail price for 100 grams of chocolate in Tokyo rose from 203 yen in January 2020 to 402 yen by July 2025.
The primary driver of this increase is the soaring cost of cacao beans. Production in major regions like West Africa has been impacted by adverse weather and diseases, leading to unstable supplies and a spike in international prices. Additionally, rising costs for sugar, dairy, energy, logistics, and labor have forced manufacturers to adjust prices. The weak yen has further exacerbated the situation by increasing the cost of importing raw materials.
Consumers are also facing “shrinkflation,” where manufacturers maintain price points but reduce the product's weight. To manage costs, experts suggest comparing the price per 100 grams rather than the total package price to identify the best value.
