Cholesterol management: New study results and upcoming oral PCSK9 inhibitor

New clinical data and upcoming pharmaceutical developments are shifting the landscape for managing high LDL cholesterol in patients with high-risk atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (Ascvd).

The Victorion-Challenge study, presented at the European Society of Cardiology Congress, compared inclisiran with bempedoic acid (Bpa). The results showed a 56.31% mean reduction in LDL-C for the inclisiran group, compared to a 15.35% reduction for the Bpa group. Additionally, 78.2% of patients in the inclisiran group reached their LDL-C targets by day 150, versus 20.3% in the Bpa group. Adverse event frequencies were similar between both groups.

Furthering the evolution of cholesterol management, the FDA has approved Lipfendra (enlicitide), the first oral PCSK9 inhibitor. Expected to be available by 2026, this medication offers an oral alternative to injectable treatments for high-risk adults, addressing the clinical need for more intensive and early LDL reduction alongside lifestyle interventions.
