Former NFL RB Chris Johnson Honored as He Battles ALS

Former Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis on Good Morning America. The interview sparked criticism of ABC’s co‑host Michael Strahan for not probing the link between football and the disease. Strahan responded that the focus was on Johnson’s own story and that he was there to serve the player, not to create controversy.

In parallel, Johnson’s alma mater, East Carolina University, announced a tribute that will run throughout the 2026 football season: every ECU helmet will feature a decal bearing Johnson’s number 5 and last name to raise ALS awareness. Athletic director Jon Gilbert said the gesture shows “Pirate Nation is with him every step of the way,” while head coach Blake Harrell echoed the sentiment.

The Titans also confirmed that Johnson will be inducted into the franchise’s Ring of Honor, further cementing his legacy on and off the field.
