Chris Johnson ALS advocacy and Titans honor
Entities: Jon Gilbert · Chris Johnson · Tennessee Titans · East Carolina University · Michael Strahan
Overview
Former NFL running back Chris Johnson disclosed his sporadic ALS diagnosis on Good Morning America on June 29, 2026, relaunched the Ice Bucket Challenge and quickly rallied teammates, celebrities and WWE stars to raise awareness and funds for ALS research. By early August the campaign had generated tens of thousands of dollars for the Massachusetts General Hospital ALS Center and sustained media attention through videos from Oprah Winfrey, LeBron James, Taylor Swift and other high‑profile participants.
On July 17 the Tennessee Titans announced that Johnson will be inducted into the franchise’s Ring of Honor during halftime of the 2026 season‑opening game against the New York Jets on September 13. The honor highlights his on‑field achievements—a single‑season record of 2,509 yards from scrimmage in 2009 and 58 career touchdowns—as well as his ongoing advocacy for ALS awareness.
The combined effort continues to boost public understanding of ALS, a disease affecting roughly 5,000 new Americans each year, while honoring Johnson’s legacy both on and off the field.
