Christian Eriksen begins individual rehabilitation in Denmark after second on‑field collapse

The 34‑year‑old Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen, under contract with Germany's VfL Wolfsburg until 2027, suffered a second on‑field collapse on 7 June 2026 during a friendly match against Ukraine in Odense. After briefly losing consciousness, he walked off the pitch on his own and was taken to the University Hospital in Odense. Eriksen, who was fitted with an implantable cardioverter‑defibrillator (ICD) following a cardiac arrest at Euro 2021, received a shock from the device during the incident.

Wolfsburg announced that Eriksen will start an individual rehabilitation programme in his native Denmark, following discussions with club managing director Dieter Hecking. The club will maintain regular contact with the player and his medical team. Leading cardiologists, including Henning Mølgaard, warned that playing at a high level with an ICD carries a high risk and advised retirement, but Eriksen has said he intends to continue his professional career. His future with Wolfsburg remains uncertain.

The club’s statement stressed ongoing medical monitoring and wished Eriksen a swift recovery.
