Eriksen cardiac collapse, rehab continues
Entities: Dieter Hecking · Christian Eriksen · VfL Wolfsburg
Overview
In early June 2026 Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac collapse during a friendly against Ukraine in Odense. His implanted cardioverter‑defibrillator delivered a shock, he briefly lost consciousness, and he was taken to the University Hospital in Odense before being released home in stable condition.
VfL Wolfsburg announced an individual rehabilitation programme to be carried out in Denmark, with regular contact between the club’s sporting director Dieter Hecking, Eriksen and his medical team. The programme officially began on 8 July 2026. Eriksen, 34, remains under contract until 2027 and has expressed his intention to resume his professional career, despite cardiologists warning that a repeat episode is likely and suggesting retirement could be advisable.
As of 28 July 2026 the player is staying in Denmark and will miss Wolfsburg’s pre‑season preparations. Hecking described the situation as “extremely delicate,” stressing that the club will not rush his return and will avoid any pressure on Eriksen while his health is monitored.
