Christian Schmidt Announces Voluntary Departure as Bosnia's High Representative Amid Political Tensions

International High Representative Christian Schmidt said he is leaving his post in Bosnia and Herzegovina reluctantly, citing internal discussions within the Peace Implementation Council and pressures from the international community. He warned that key issues such as state‑owned land, the South gas interconnector project and the upcoming October elections will require decisive action by Bosnian authorities.

Bosnian politicians reacted strongly. Parliament member Darijana Filipović argued that Schmidt’s exit is a moment for domestic actors to assume responsibility, calling for reforms to the electoral law and stressing the need to resolve state‑property disputes that have stalled projects like corridor 5C. SDA leader Bakir Izetbegović used the occasion to urge voters to support the SDA, claiming the party can bring stability and warning that a win for opponents would produce no change.

All three voices underscore the political uncertainty in Bosnia and Herzegovina as it prepares for elections and navigates reforms while the international supervisory role winds down.
