Christian Schmidt steps down as Bosnia's High Representative, successor selection pending

Christian Schmidt, the outgoing High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, announced his resignation in May, saying he was responding to U.S. pressure linked to a planned gas pipeline and concerns about preserving the Dayton peace agreement. "I have put my head on a silver platter so that the institutions created by the Dayton peace agreement are preserved," he told the Tagesspiegel.

Schmidt stressed that the Office of the High Representative (OHR) must retain its broad powers to intervene in legislation until Bosnian politicians are ready to act independently. An interim head, U.S. diplomat Louis Crishock, will assume the role while a successor is chosen. Schmidt met with President Jovan Kalaba of Bosnia's Central Election Commission to discuss preparations for the 2026 general elections, stating, "Free, fair and credible elections remain the basis of trust in democracy in Bosnia and Herzegovina."

The European Union and other PIC member states continue to seek a consensus candidate, preferably from the EU, to replace Schmidt and maintain momentum toward EU accession.
