Christian Schmidt to Exit Bosnia High Representative Post, US Anticipates New Appointee by June

Christian Schmidt, the outgoing High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, said his departure is imminent but has not identified a successor. He cited unclear timing for his exit and noted ongoing US pressure, describing it as “almost palpable.” Schmidt highlighted unresolved issues such as the handling of state property covering about 30% of the country’s territory, which hampers investment and the planned U.S. gas pipeline from the Adriatic.

The U.S. State Department announced that a new High Representative is expected to assume the role by the end of June. The department expressed disappointment with European partners for failing to reach a consensus on an Italian candidate during the PIC meeting in early June and indicated continued U.S. support for the Dayton peace agreement and Bosnia’s territorial integrity. The transition comes as Bosnia remains outside the European Union accession negotiations, underscoring the continued relevance of the High Representative’s presence.
