Christine Lagarde confirms 2027 departure from ECB presidency

European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has addressed speculation regarding her future, stating, “I am leaving in 2027.” However, she declined to confirm whether she will complete her full term ending in October 2027, responding “we will see” when asked for clarification.

Lagarde emphasized that any transition will be handled in a “most professional manner.” Her comments have intensified discussions regarding her successor. Reports suggest France may support Dutch central banker Klaas Knot for the presidency as part of a broader agreement to distribute top ECB roles, potentially involving a French candidate for the position of chief economist.

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo noted that discussions regarding the ECB's future should begin, stating that the process depends on Lagarde's decision but that institutional planning is necessary due to multiple upcoming vacancies.
