Speculation has intensified regarding the potential early departure of European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde from her post, which is currently scheduled to end in October 2027.

Initial reports suggested Lagarde might transition to a new role, with possibilities including participation in French political campaigns or succeeding Klaus Schwab as the head of the World Economic Forum (WEF). While Lagarde had previously dismissed rumors of an early exit, the WEF is reportedly considering her for its presidency.

Discussions regarding her potential move to the WEF took place during a board meeting near Geneva. Reports from the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung identify Lagarde as a “putative candidate” for the presidency, a role she may assume in 2027. During the board meeting, Lagarde reportedly expressed that she was “ready to serve.”

However, Lagarde is seeking assurances that internal tensions within the WEF have been resolved following the departure of Klaus Schwab in April 2025. Schwab left the organization following an investigation into financial irregularities; although he was cleared of wrongdoing, organizational relationships remain strained.

As the WEF undergoes this leadership transition, it is currently co-chaired by BlackRock CEO Larry Fink and Roche vice-chairman André Hoffmann, who are expected to preside over the January 2027 Davos meeting. Meanwhile, Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has reportedly advocated for the succession to be resolved internally. Because Lagarde has declined to commit to completing her full term at the ECB, European nations have begun discussing potential candidates to succeed her.
