Christine Lagarde considers early ECB exit but rejects French presidency bid

ECB President Christine Lagarde has indicated she may step down from her position a few months before her term officially ends in October 2027. While she confirmed she will remain in office through 2027, she noted that any early departure would only be for a matter of months and would not significantly disrupt global stability.

Lagarde explicitly ruled out a candidacy for the French presidency in April 2027, citing the high demands of the role and her age. She also expressed concern regarding France's fiscal health, warning that a public debt approaching 120% of GDP requires serious reform and a credible path forward.

Addressing the energy crisis, Lagarde advocated for targeted and time-limited government measures to mitigate rising costs. She noted that natural gas price increases have significantly outpaced those of oil. Furthermore, she identified geopolitical instability in the Middle East as a primary risk to the European economy. In contrast to the fiscal concerns in France, Lagarde praised Greece as a model of successful economic adjustment and market confidence recovery.
