Christodoulides and Erhürman agree to weekly meetings on Cyprus

Greek Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman met in the UN buffer zone in Nicosia to discuss the Cyprus problem. The nearly three-hour meeting, held under UN auspices, focused on progress following UN Secretary-General António Guterres' recent visit to the island.

The two leaders agreed to intensify their dialogue by meeting at least once a week, or more frequently if necessary. They also agreed to announce the members of the steering committee for the civil society consultative body on Thursday.

While Christodoulides described the meeting as having a positive balance and stated the process is on a “good path,” Erhürman expressed concerns that recent developments have undermined trust and run contrary to the logic of confidence-building measures. Erhürman noted that while he is ready to progress on issues such as landmine removal, new crossing points, and the rights of children from mixed marriages, political equality remains a non-negotiable core issue that cannot be subject to “give-and-take” with other topics.

Discussions included methodology, confidence-building measures, and the potential for a future 5+1 meeting. UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin is expected in Cyprus in early September to prepare the ground for the resumption of formal negotiations.
