Christopher Bell leverages consistent finishes under new NASCAR Chase format

NASCAR driver Christopher Bell is finding value in a string of runner-up finishes due to the sport's restructured championship system. Despite a 30-race winless streak, Bell has secured second place in four of his last five Cup Series races, tying Harry Gant’s 1981 record for most runner-up finishes in a single season without a victory.

The return of ‘the Chase’ emphasizes accumulating points through consistent, high-level finishes rather than relying solely on wins to qualify for the playoffs. This format change has positioned the Joe Gibbs Racing driver as a strong contender for the 10-race title run, as he currently ranks sixth in the points standings.

Bell faces challenges heading into the race at Richmond Raceway, including the loss of pit selection and the ejection of car chief Chris Sherwood after the car failed pre-race inspection twice. This follows a difficult season for Bell, which included recovering from a broken wrist sustained during a crash at Michigan International Speedway in June.
